The Variety

Estate Grown

Like the Nyamatu lot that is currently on our menu as a Single Origin, this lot also comes from a relatively small Kenyan estate. Muhathi Estate spans 8 hectares and is overseen by Peris Wambui Karungondo. Peris grows more traditional Kenyan varieties SL-28 and SL-34 as well as disease and pest resistant varieties, Batian and Ruiru. In addition to overseeing the cultivation of Muhathi Estate's coffee, Peris installed processing equipment to pulp, wash, and dry all of his coffee on-site -- a worthy investment in quality and traceability that allows him to capture more of the value of the coffee he grows than he would if he sold his harvest in cherry to a centralized washing station.

Place

Muhathi Estate is located in Ngewa-Komothai, Kiambu County, just beyond Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital. Despite its proximity to the city, Kiambu has long been an agricultural center, producing tea, coffee, and dairy. The area’s high elevation, combined with warm days and cool nights, creates ideal conditions for growing specialty coffee. However, challenges to its agricultural status are mounting. The prevalence of coffee pests and diseases, coupled with the high cost of agricultural inputs, has led many farmers to sell their land to developers eager to capitalize on Nairobi’s urban sprawl.

To manage the risks and high costs associated with coffee production, Peris participates in ongoing education on best agricultural practices On the estate, he plants diverse coffee varieties and follows organic fertilization practices, using compost instead of agrochemicals to keep the coffee trees healthy and productive.
